Lost tribe of Westwood

A friend of mine wrote in her Live Journal this question. If salvation is dependent on believing that Jesus died for your sins, what happens to those people who died before Jesus came? Makes you think doesnt it? Are they then saved by works? This just might be the topic of my next talk. I have a lot of studying to do. Everyones input is welcome
