2. Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means half an hour.Five minutes is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.
3. Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something,and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with "nothing" usually end in "fine".
4. Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't Do It!
5. Loud Sigh: This is not actually a word, but is a non-verbalstatement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing hereand arguing with you about nothing (refer back to #3 for the meaningof nothing).
6. That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a woman can make to a man. That's okay means she wants to think long and hardbefore deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.
7. Thanks: A woman is thanking you, do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome.
8. Whatever: It's a woman's way of saying "F" YOU!
9. Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement!meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a manasking "what's wrong?" For the woman's response, refer to #3.

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I've ever written. My odometer rolls over to 50 this week, so here's an update:
1. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.

4. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
12. It's OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it.

Is it still the weekend?

On Friday we recieved a call from our daughter. Her boyfriend had run away from the house after receiving a beating from his father. His step mom had quickly got my daughter out of the house and back to ours. Her boyfriend, Cody, had gone to the corner drugs store to call the police. My daughter and I met up with Cody and the police in Walgreens parking lot. The Muskegon police, in a very proffessional manner, took down the information from Cody and my daughter, and then called for an ambulence to transport Cody to the hospital. It was found that Cody cracked a orbital bone in his face. The police arrested the father on domestic violence, the step mom on past parking tickets, and took her 3 small children to Child Haven. After Cody was released from the hospital, being 16 years old, he also was taken to Child Haven. We had offered to take him to our house, but Childrens Protective Service insisted that he go to Child Haven. To Cody, this was like being arrested. He had done nothing wrong, been beaten up and did not resist, and is now being "arrested" for his own good. Being the weekend, nothing happens, so there he sat.
Monday Morning, Muskegon Family Court, we heard that his father had been bailed out by an old girlfriend. He step mom had also been released. This was a hearing to see where the children should go. Cody's biological Mom is in Muskegon County Jail, and was not told of this hearing. They could not contact her for some reason. The hearing would have to be ajourned until Friday. The Judicial officer graciously released all the kids back to the stepmom until Fiday. There is a court order prohibitting the father from coming near the house, his wife, or the kids.
We had offered to take Cody into our home, and the father had agreed to give his consent. Now he has gone back on that to try to use it as leverage to get the Cody to go back on his charges or purger himself and say that nothing happened.
As a pastor, and with help from Sheriff Lt. Tuff, and Chaplin Dexter, I was able to get in the jail and visit with Codys biological Mom. I was able to inform her of Cody's situation, and of the Friday hearing. The court had been unable to reach her because she was in lockdown. She has also agreed to give over Cody's custodial rights to us, which also has the agreement of the stepmom and Cody. This is where we stand now.

They walked in tandem, each of the ninety-two students filing intothe already crowded auditorium. With rich maroon gowns flowing and thetraditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt.
Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles, and Moms freely brushed awaytears.
This class would not pray during the commencements ----- not bychoice but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.
The principal and several students were careful to stay within theguidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational andchallenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no oneasked for blessings on the graduates or their families.
The speeches were nice, but they were routine......until the finalspeech received a standing ovation.
A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood stilland silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students,every single one of them, suddenly SNEEZED!!!!
The student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, " GOD BLESS YOU, each and every one of you!" And he walked off stage...
The audience exploded into applause. The graduating class found aunique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without thecourt's approval.

Week update

Monday started out on a down note. Liz's appeal for unemployment was rejected. Her former employer is fighting it, even though they said they wouldn't. We have refiled an appeal.
Wednesday, my daughter Catherine's boyfriend asked for my permission to marry her. She got her ring the same day, and we rejoiced with them.
Donald Jr. has moved out, but is coming up Sunday with his girlfriend to celebrate his birthday.
Lindsey is going to summer school, and bouncing between her boyfriends house and ours. She will start Muskegon High School this fall, her third high school in four years.
With Catherine engaged, Donald and Lindsey half moved out, Liz unemployed, fighting with her former employer, fighting with unemplyment,fighting her emotional demons, and trying to finish off her schooling, it a wonder that her and I are even close to sanity.
Well that brings us up to date. I can't imagine going thru this alone. With God, friends, and family, we will survive.

I had the privilege to officiate a wedding on 7/7/07. This wedding was held at the JJRanch in Rothbury. Katy and Jim tied the knott. It was a small intimate wedding (150 people) next to a beautiful Golf club. The wedding was outside, and the weather was beautiful. Many emotions came back that day.I have been married to my bride for 25 years and I don't regret one of those days. The last time I stood on a golf course was with my father, about three years ago. The bride in this wedding I have known since she was a child. The brides parents have aged gracefully. My kids are all old enough to be married.
Time is passing us by. Our children are the future as we become the past. What have we , as a generation, left our kids. I don't believe that we have left them much, other then technical advances. What we have left them will be my topic on July 22 @ the Lakeside Lighthouse Chapel. Its called, "Faith of our Fathers".

Discrimination.

Can anyone tell me the true meaning of discrimination. I understand that every person has rights, and to violate those right would be discrimination. It use to be that discrimination was used in cases for race, sex, and handicap. Now it has gone allot farther. We now consider sexual preference, a persons citizenship, a persons dress, and more. By voicing our opinions, we may be discriminating against someone. Why then can't christian stand up a sue for discrimination. We are prohibited from praying in public, or talking about our faith in public. The only people I see that are discriminated against are Christian's. We have less rights. A persons sexual preference has more rights then a person religious preference. How low can we go?

This is my first fathers day without my father. It feels strange not calling him this morning to wish him a "happy fathers day". I miss the ole boy, but I can still hear his voice. He was my father, and for that I am eternally thankful. Life is a little more hollow without Dad and Mom, but I am much richer for them. I guess that for me that is why there is a fathers day. To remember the lessons of my father, and to try to live up to the high standards that he set. To be the best father I can be.

What a week, or should I say, "What a month." My wife lost her job, we lost our health insurance, and my daughter ended up in the hospital.

My wife was fired from her job because she has depression. Her former employer has done nothing but slam her name, lie about her, lie to her, and smile and say things like , "We want you to be happy and move on." She requested her file, and received a hurriedly put together string of lies and innuendos. We found out that they had purposely harassed, and made other employees write down something negative about Liz. All the awards that she had earned with the company were missing from her records. I realize a company does not like having handicap people working for them, but to try and drive my wife insane has gone beyond the limits. She was set up in the most vicious and cruel way.

Since we had health insurance through her job, it was canceled the day she was fired. My daughter was admitted to the hospital this week. Although she is now home, the diagnosis is that she has an ovarian cyst that may pop, and possibly Croons disease. This will all have to be paid out of pocket.

All of this has put a terrible strain on my wife. She feels that she has let everyone down.

Forgiveness is for those who truly seek forgiveness. I will not feel sad when they are served legal papers. Although I was willing to put this behind me, I support my wife 100% in bringing action. What they did to her, I would not even think of doing to my worst enemy.

Happy Fathers Day. How many ties will be given. How many fathers will get just what they want. How many fathers will get just what they need or deserve. What is fathers day? Is it a day for priests? Do step fathers count. Should it be a day to celebrate our father in heaven? How about a father whose children have passed away. How about fathers who don't know they are fathers?
Where are the rules and who made them up? Should all fathers get the day off? If one day is for fathers, do you ignore your father all the rest of the days? Is there an age limit for fathers? Can you save up fathers days so you can have a fathers week? What is the penalty if you don't celebrate fathers day? Does fathers day apply also to cats, dogs, etc?
What are the right presents for fathers day? Is it ok just to give a card? Is there a penalty for men who pretend to be fathers just to get the presents? How about fathers whose wives are pregnant with their first child? Is fathers day just for straight men or are Gay's included? Do women who are the father figure in a lesbian relationship considered fathers? If this is correct, are power tools out as a gift?
George Washington was the father of our country, Bill Gates is the father of the computer, and other fathers of invention, are they considered for fathers day? If you "father" an idea, are you included?
If your kids never call you father, but call you dad, papa, etc.., are you in?
Since fathers day is so popular, should we tax it? Are fathers allowed to sleep in on fathers day? Who is the resident authority on fathers day? If a father failed to celebrate mothers day, does he forfeit fathers day? If a mother failed to receive her dues on mothers day, does she get to have fathers day as a replacement day? Can mothers and fathers share 1/2 of the day together? If children fail to honor their father on this day, can they be grounded? Do mothers and fathers do so little, that they get only one day apiece? Does anyone know all the rules?

The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a honk if you love Jesus bumper sticker.I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put in on my bumper. I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed.I found that LOTS of people love Jesus. Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and when he leaned out of his window and screamed, "for the love of God, GO! GO!" What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus. Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love. There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach... I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. When I asked my teenage daughter in the back seat what that meant, she said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something. Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back. My daughter burst out laughing, why even she was enjoying this religious experience.A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed.So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on through the intersection.I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!

Lawyers............... Good or Bad

We went to our lawyers yesterday to make sure that my wifes rights wern't being violated, and to get his opinion on her serverence package. He can't help us because he also has represented her former employer in the past, and it would be a conflict of interest. Now I know why big companies spread their legal work out to many lawyer. It makes it harder for the ordinary people to get competant legal advice. We now have to go to Grand Rapids to find legal help. I am also aware that they(Liz's former employer) can out spend us in legal cost.

Michigan is in the worst financial shape that it has ever been in. High unemployment, high cost of living, Home repo's at the highest level since the depression, and no one to blame but ourselves. We can't blame our leaders because they are busy blaming each other. We have a lame, or incompetent Governor, and a other elected officials that have lost touch with reality. Still, with all these problems, aliens are still trying to come here. I guess we still have it better then most.

When you look at the grand scale, you are only one person in the whole wide world. That makes you a very small speck. That speck disappears when you compare to the history of the people of the world. Until people try to get together, nothing will get done. The political parties want you divided, or all all one side. (their side) It use to be that the squeaky wheel get the oil. In today's world, the squeaky wheel gets replaced.

A couple was dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They turned on a night light, turned on the phone answering machine, covered their pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard. They phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and the couple opened the front door to leave their house. The cat they had put out into the yard ran back into the house. They didn't want the cat shut in the house because she always tried to eat the bird.
The wife got into the taxi while the husband went back inside to get the cat. The cat ran upstairs, the man in hot pursuit.

Waiting in the cab, the wife didn't want the driver to know the house would be empty for the night. She explained to the taxi driver that her husband would be out soon. "He's just going upstairs to say good-bye to my mother."
A few minutes later, the husband got into the cab. "Sorry I took so long, he said as they drove away. "Stupid bitch was hiding under the bed. I had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off so I grabbed her by the neck. Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked.

I hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out into the back yard! She better not shit in the roses!"

The Truth, what is it good for?

When someone asks you for the truth, what are they asking you for. Do they assume that you would tell a lie, so they are asking you to tell the truth? When a women asks a man, "Do I look fat in this Dress?", does she really want the truth?

My wife was just fired from her job as a sales associate. He had just been awarded "outstanding sales associate" award last month. She received a letter that said how proud the company was of her. A couple of weeks ago she was reprimanded for being too friendly with the customers. Later she was reprimanded for being not friendly enough with the customers. She was then reprimanded for being too nice, and then to mean to fellow employees. She was them reprimanded for not asking the manager before making decision, and later reprimanded for calling up a manager to ask a question. Last week they asked her to quit. She denied the request. Yesterday they fired her, made promises they couldn't and wouldn't keep just to get rid of her. This all to save thousands of dollars, plus they could hire someone else at minimum wage and save even more. Because of their actions, we are without health insurance and her perfect work record has been tarnished by lies and innuendos. They say that they will fight unemployment payments, and not reimburse her for her college classes that have one week left. (College reimbursement program). I will not say who the employer is because that ACLU will be looking into it. Now we will have lawyers involved and a lot more money spent because a company didn't realize what the truth was, or chose to ignore it because they thought they were above the law, and spin was easier.

Political problems are caused by using spin instead of the truth.

In Grand Rapids, a high school graduation cannot have the Lord's Prayer sung during the ceremony. By the way, the ceremony is being held in a church. If church and state are suppose to be separate, why hold the ceremony in a church. This is not about rights, its about lies, lies that singing one christian song, in a church, will violate one persons rights. The truth is that a small amount of people want to make sure that Christians don't have rights.

To tell you the truth, I am angry this morning. I am pissed off. I am not angry with God, because he will guide us through. I am not angry with my friends, because I care for them. I am angry when people lie to my face or to someone else. Stand up and tell the truth. Don't hide behind spin and half truths. Why hurt others for your own glory and wealth.

I will now go and pray that God will help these people. I pray that they will seek his forgiveness. For us this is one bump in the road. We will survive, but there are others out there who won't.

Short Term Memory had always been associated with older people. This had to be the farthest from the truth. As you get older, you just don't care, but you still remember. Here are some items that back this up
1- Gas prices. Most older people can remember when gas was 21 cents per gallon. Younger people can't even remember what the gas prices were yesterday.
2- Honest Politician. Most older people can remember when honesty meant something. Young people believe that spin eliminates dishonesty.
3- Many older people remember working for a company their whole life. Today people are lucky to get five years in.
4- Remember full service gas station. They filled your car, checked your oil, checked oil pressure, and washed your windows. Today's youth can't even remember to put gas in the car.
5- Most older people remember when a handshake meant something. Today it has to be a 50 page contract because no one can remember.

Ask a person about World War II, an older person will tell you in detail about it. A younger person will give you a puzzled look. Then their answer will most likely be, " That was the war after World War I.

Its the start of the Memorial Day Weekend. Its a day that we honor our fallen soldiers and those who served in the armed forces. We also should recognize the Presidents who put them there. WWI, and WWII who obvious why the presidents put our soldiers in harms way. The Korean War I might have a big "maybe". Every war since then no one can explain without taking a political side. Lets just throw out the stupid reasons like, "WOMD, stop the Russians, stop the North Koreans, stop the North Vietnamese, stop Iraq, stop Iran, stop the terrorist, etc......

The bottom line is, war diverts our attention away from the things that count. Poverty in the United States, democracy gone wild, Run -away greed by big business and Politicians. We have concerts for "feed the world", while many go hungry here at home. We complain about Mexicans coming to America, yet we go where ever we please. We defend democracy abroad, but don't practice it here. We send missionaries to convert the world, but can't even pray in our own schools.

This Memorial Day lets remember why this country was founded and why these Soldiers had to die. Lets remember the Men and women that listened to their leader who said they were defending their country. Lets remember the Politicians, Democrat and Republican who murdered our soldiers since Korea. They are the ones laughing all the way to the bank, tripping over the bodies of the fallen soldiers.

It seems like yesterday that I was bitching because of bad weather. Lately the weather has been beautiful. The temp. is in the 80"s and sunny. With gas prices going through the ceiling, we live close to the lake. We have beautiful trees to shade the house. The Lord has gifted us with a beautiful house, and great friends.

This weekend , our rock band is playing once again in Lakeside. We disbanded last year, but was asked to play one more time. We will set aside our walkers,wheelchairs, and canes to play one more time. The Fudge shop in Lakeside is celebrating their anniversary on Saturday, and we will play outside from 1-3 . We are not quite that old, but we haven't played together in almost a year, and will do it without rehearsal.

Gas prices has made me ride my bike more. This is good exercise for my heart, so I have to thank the greed of big business, the ineptness of politicians, and the ignorance of lots of people to get me off my butt.

I pray for our Governor who lies through her teeth to save her butt. I pray for our elected officials who lie through their teeth to save their butts and destroy the other party. I pray for the big business that misuses their constitutional right to make a profit, and rape Americans.

Keep the sun shinning in Michigan. Tell your elected officials that you are praying for them to stop their lies and work for Michigan. Ride a bike, car pool, walk, and do what you can to save gas. If you buy less gas, your politicians in this state will realize what a budget crisis really is. The money that they receive due to high gas prices will be gone. They will have to tell the truth of where the gas taxes are going. God does work through prayers.
